Ron Smith, Pharm.D., is Vice President of Strategic Development at Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina. He is responsible for leading the company’s strategic direction and business development efforts.
In his role, Dr. Smith has been particularly focused on collaborative efforts with health care providers to develop new care and payment models to promote quality care and preventive health. He has also played a key role in helping the company sharpen its strategic focus as it seeks to improve the health care system in North Carolina.
During his tenure, BCBSNC has received national attention for innovative efforts to prevent and treat obesity, increase immunization, encourage the use of generic medication, and to implement electronic prescribing. Ron began his professional career in health care at BCBSNC by managing pharmacy programs and initiatives. He served as Vice President, Healthcare Programs and Operational Effectiveness and Chief Pharmacist until 2010, when he assumed his present position. Previously, he was an account director at Medco, where he assisted health plans and employers in the management of prescription drug benefits. With Novartis, he served in medical affairs and corporate account management.
Ron currently serves on several boards including the Campbell University College of Health Sciences Board, and the advisory board for Wake Forest University Center for Worker Health. He also actively serves in a leadership capacity for a number of professional and civic organizations and is a frequent guest lecturer at a number of colleges including Campbell University, Duke University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Dr. Smith holds a bachelor of science in biology and business administration (cum laude), a master of business administration and a doctor of pharmacy degree (cum laude). After completing his doctorate from Campbell University’s School of Pharmacy, Dr. Smith completed a post-doctoral fellowship in health care administration at BCBSNC.
